An ‘Open Day’ for Grade 7 to 12 students’ parents was held on November 21 and 22 at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Kyzylorda.
Parents of Grade 7 – 9 students visited on the first day; and on the second day, parents of Grades 10 -12 visited the school. Feedback showed that there was a lot of interest from the parents of seventh graders. Since it is their first year in the new school, it was particularly interesting for parents to find out how their children spend their day at school.
‘Parents had the opportunity to sit at the same desk as their child, to observe the strategies used by teachers during lessons, and to what extent they are effective when teaching the students’, says the Director of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School, Bakhyt Zhumatai.
The ‘Open Day’ programme was very busy. In addition to attending classes and extra classes, parents were given workshops about a new model for assessing student achievement. Interested parents could access professional advice from the psychologists and the school’s medical staff. They were also able to familiarise themselves with the activities of the school library where they were invited to browse the books. Parents compiled a list of compulsory literature reading for their children. Besides this, parents were able to become acquainted with the school cafeteria’s menu. By the end of the day, they were invited to participate in a questionnaire which showed that the event was enlightening for parents.
‘I was very interested in observing the quality of education my grandson receives. All the necessary conditions have been created for students here. The teaching strategies used by the school’s teachers enable children to reveal their intellectual capabilities, think critically, and develop personally. Today, I am returning home with only one impression: my grandson is in the reliable hands of professionals, and he will definitely get a good education here,’ said Shaikhislam Nogayuly, a caregiver of a Grade 8 student.
