Converting External Summative Assessment (ESA) scores to UNT Certificate scores
Conversion of results of the External Summative Assessment (ESA) into points of the UNT Certificate is carried out according to the established scale
UNT Subject | Subjects of Summative | Results of Summative
Mandatory subjects | Mathematical literacy | Mathematics | Highest score of one of the components or the total score of all components |
Reading literacy | Kazakh/Russian language
History of Kazakhstan | Kazakhstan in the Modern World
Selected subjects | Mathematics | Mathematics | First and third components |
Kazakh/Russian language | Kazakh/Russian language | First component
Kazakh/Russian literature | Kazakh/Russian language | Second component
English Language | International IELTS exam
Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, World history, Fundamentals of Law | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, World history, Fundamentals of Law | Highest score of one of the components or the total score of all components |
In total, UNT has five subjects – three of them are mandatory, two are selected (by choice). For all subjects (exceptions are core mathematics, Kazakh/Russian language and Kazakh/Russian literature as core subjects), the highest result in one of the components, or the total score (depending on which result is better) is taken for conversion. Example: if a student receives grades A, B, C, and a total grade of B in three components of chemistry, he is given the highest A certificate in the UNT, and 44 points according to the table. Another example: in two components of “Kazakhstan in the modern world”, the student receives A and A, but in total he gets A * (which is also possible), in which case he is given the highest A*, and full 15 points according to the table. In core mathematics, a separate assessment is made (it is derived specifically for conversion into UNT points), which is obtained as a result of combining the results of the first and third components. For those who choose language and literature as core subjects, the language is graded for the first component, for literature – for the second component. The result of the IELTS exam is taken as the English language for conversion. A score of 6.0 and above guarantees a maximum score of 45 on the UNT certificate.
Only 5 or 6 subjects are indicated on the final ESA certificate (NIS Grade 12 Certificate) (depending on the choice of geography for studying in high school). For all other subjects that were not studied in high school, you can take the exam through application by a parent. Subjects such as “World History”, “Fundamentals of Law” require additional independent preparation.

Question: Can I choose a combination of Mathematics and Physics if I study Chemistry and Biology?
Answer: It is possible, but for this you will have to prepare yourself and pass the ESA exam in physics. Same goes for all other unselected subjects.
Question: When should I make the final choice on my UNT combination?
Answer: The sooner you decide on your combination, the better. But you will have 1-2 days after the announcement of the results of the ESA for the final choice.
Question: Are the results of the UNT important for admission to Nazarbayev University or to universities in other countries?
Answer: Nazarbayev University is the only university in Kazakhstan that does not require UNT results. All other universities of the country accept only UNT. In foreign universities UNT certificate, as a rule, is not required. But separately, any foreign university can request it.
